Abstract: Extremist exploitation of social media platforms is an important regulatory question for civil society, government, and the private sector. Extremists exploit social media for a range of reasons—from spreading hateful narratives and propaganda to financing, recruitment, and sharing operational information. Policy responses to this question fit under two headings, strategic communication andcontent moderation. At the center of both of these policy responses is a calculation about how best to limit audience exposure to extremist narratives and maintain the marginality of extremist views, while being conscious of rights to free expression and the appropriateness of restrictions on speech. This special issue on “Countering Extremists on Social Media: Challenges for Strategic Communication and Content Moderation” focuses on one form of strategic communication, countering violent extremism. In this editorial we discuss the background and effectiveness of this approach, and introduce five articles which develop multiple strands of research into responses and solutions to extremist exploitation of social media. We conclude by suggesting an agenda for future research on how multi stake holder initiatives to challenge extremist exploitation of social media are conceived, designed, and implemented, and the challenges these initiatives need to surmount.

Abstract: This special issue proposes new ways of seeing and thinking aboutpostcolonial intellectuals through the frame of transnationalscreens. For this purpose, the issue develops around the twofoldnotion of the intellectual as a filmmaker and the intellectual as anobject of filmmaking. In particular, it focuses on the ways in whichthis interrelationship expands notions of postcolonial theory andpractice regarding the aesthetic and political intervention of intel-lectuals in transnational screen culture. Many postcolonial figureshave been influential not only in rethinking the ways in whichrepresentation should be conceived and theorized but also ininspiring new forms of visuality and aesthetics through their lifeand work. These figures include Frantz Fanon, Assia Djebar, andStuart Hall, and others explored in this issue, such as Toni Morrison,Raoul Peck, Ai Weiwei, and Steve McQueen. The special issue alsoincludes exclusive interviews with Ai Weiwei and Trinh T. Minh-ha,artists, intellectuals, activists, and filmmakers whose engagementwith postcolonial debates, and more broadly with the politics andaesthetics of filmmaking, have contributed to a reshaping of con-temporary postcolonial realities and discourses, in scholarship andthe public sphere.

Abstract: This article aims to study the uses of the letter as a discursive strategy and narrative element in contemporary Latin American films directed by relatives of political militants and victims of the repressive apparatuses of the Southern Cone dictatorships. To this end, we analyze the links that interweave both the epistolary enunciation and the letter, in its archival dimension, with the cinema in the first person and the performative modes of the  audiovisual creation. Likewise, we propose different models of the memory of the authoritarian past carried out by these films: the paradigm of resistance, the victim of State terrorism and the collateral victim.

Keywords: cine argentino; sensaciones; imagen-espacio; ciudad; olores; tránsitos.

Abstract: The relationship between cinema and city are interrelated because film arises as an urban experience. According to the division elaborated by Gilles Deleuze, classic cinema is conceived from an image-movement perspective whereas modern cinema from an image-temporal aspect. However contemporary films are founded in a dimension between image and space. This article analyzes recent films from Argentine cinema that allow the contemplation of images that inhabit an urban sensation. Throughout the analysis, elements like the night, the summer and the heat show the audience the circulation of the city of Buenos Aires while at the same time exhibit a possible understanding of urban images through the sensations that cross every-day transit: the suffocation, the humidity, the vapors, the smells and the phantasmagoric memories of encounters and separations that all constitute a city.

A brutal humanism for the new millennium? The legacy of Neorealism in contemporary cinema of migration

Journal of Italian Cinema & Media Studies, 8 (1). pp. 61-77. https://doi.org/10.1386/jicms_00005_1

Keywords: Neorealism; Fire at Sea; refugee crisis; film festivals; brutal humanism; gaze theory; neocolonialism; cinema of migration

Abstract: This article proposes that the institutional construction of Italian cinema of migration in the new millennium may be conditioned by an enduring, implicit aspect of Neorealism’s legacy: a ‘brutal humanism’ which posits the witnessing of bodies in crisis as an ethical act. Supplementing Karl Schoonover’s (2012) theory of brutal humanism with Lacanian gaze theory, I argue that the Berlin International Film Festival’s synopsis of a recent cause célèbre of Italian cinema, Fuocoammare (Fire at Sea) (Rosi, 2016), instantiates a ‘brutal vision’ directed towards the figure of the refugee, while the film text’s depiction of the ‘objective gaze’ of these characters challenges such relations of power and looking. The article underlines the importance of competitive European film festivals and paratexts in the international circulation and ideological construction of Italian cinema, while arguing that the film text itself can offer a site of resistance to the meanings that institutions ascribe to it.

Abstract: Science journalism and science dissemination have gained prominence in recent years. Coupled with an increase in scientific production due to the COVID-19 pandemic, journalistic coverage published more and more content about science, which also occurred on digital social networks, where various scientists shared research or new findings. In this line, this research report aims to  show how the boundaries of science journalism and science dissemination have been addressed in recent literature, based on publications in SciELO, Scopus, and EBSCO databases over the last 10 years (2011 to 2021) in the Ibero-American sphere. By analyzing 44 papers and research essays written in English, Portuguese, and Spanish languages, the two variables of  this research were examined. Findings suggest some lack of clarity in referencing the concept of science dissemination (in half of the articles its meaning is not explicitly defined), as well as the theoretical similarity established between this and science journalism in various studies. The  lack of studies on the reception of science news and the impact of science dissemination is highlighted. The main conclusions show that studies on science journalism increasingly focus on content analysis of messages and interviews with journalists to understand the characteristics of their production; however, consensus on the differences between the two professional activities has not yet been achieved.

Abstract: Lying in politics is not a new practice. Its analysis as a strategy has been the subject of numerous semiotic studies on truth and strategy. The appearance of new “populist” political movements we can see the emergence of a new way of treating truth - and therefore deceit and lies - or at least their political significance. These new forms of politics are based on a new type of truthfulness contract between the recipients and the addressees of the discourse. We are facing a real epistemological change in political discourse, which will no longer necessarily have anything to do with truth and which gives rise to what could be considered a new political episteme.
