Abstract: The rise of the trend of film on art in Latin America occurred between the mid-1950s and mid-1970s, in close contact with the modern cinema and the renewal of the cultural field. Today, based on UNESCO recommendations to safeguard moving images and as a result of the effectiveness of new technologies, there is a process of valuing Latin American short films on art. Thus, the article explores this trend in a comparative manner in Mexico and Chile, with the aim of examining its main characteristics and glimpse the similarities and differences around the patrimonial valuation of the works, both in the moment of their creation and in the present time. For this, we carry out the study of the socio-cultural context of the production of the films and the entities of legitimation, the aesthetic and sociopragmatic analysis of the selected corpus, and the reflection on the contemporary institutional revaluation of film on art, in the framework of public policies related this cultural sector.

Abstract: This essay studies three Latin American documentary experiences that work with archived visual memory. An anthro-pologist becomes fascinated with an old photographic archive in La Paz, Bolivia. The story of an imaginary researcher who finds some movies about an island far away in the Pacific Ocean, and travels to it, and from there he writes to a friend. Finally, the story of a filmmaker who searched for The Life of General Villa (1914), found fragments of it in La Venganza de Pancho Villa (1931), the filmmaker passionate of his own story begins to buy lots of films, old mechanical cinema, and all kinds of visual instruments to live in a utopia called Anarchivia.

Abstract: This article examines the ways in which the cinematic practices of the audiovisual productions Farmacopea (2013) by Beatriz Santiago Muñoz (Puerto Rico) and Río Verde (2017) by Diego and Álvaro Sarmiento (Peru) address human-nature assemblages by articulating a post-anthropocentric gaze. Addressing these two movies as neoregional films, this essay discusses how these contemporary audiovisual productions explore the disastrous environmental histories of the tropical plantation in the Caribbean and the extractive exploitation of the Peruvian-Amazon jungle, exhibiting cinematic techniques that disrupt the socially committed tradition of Latin American cinema of the 1960s centred on human communities. Deploying experimental and poetic cinematic techniques, it is argued that these movies feature small matter by foregrounding local poisonous vegetation and corporal takes of humans and animals that register landscapes in disappearance in the face of modern extractive practices. Departing from Santiago Muñoz’s and the Sarmiento brothers’ filmic productions, we discuss how the embedding of Amazonian rhythms and unruly Caribbean plants in their filmic narratives produces sites of situated hope that both reconceptualise Latin American cinema and contest the necro-political violence of the modern extractive machinery.

Abstract: Conference panels allow for free-flowing conversation with panellists and the audience. They lead to insights that come through thinking together with people that can bring complementary knowledge to the discussion. Yet these exchanges can also be ephemeral with ideas evaporating as we engage with the next paper or panel discussion. We address this in a search for a lasting contribution to debates in this write up of a panel on women and cinema, for the conference ‘Women and Cinema in Ibero-America: Politics, Histories, Representations, Intersectionality’, at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid in September 2022. We agreed that the topics and the discussion at our panel were of broad interest and provide food for thought for academics wanting to adopt a decolonial feminist approach. Topics that we discussed included, how to approach archival research in women’s film and video, and how to ‘depatriarchalise’ the archives, and democratise access to them, as fundamental to offering a feminist perspective in archival research; how to challenge a Western androcentric paradigm and auteurist perspectives that too often erase women’s contribution to film cultures; and, how to challenge epistemological barriers that deny women creators voices. In addition, the panel presented a first-hand perspective of eurocentrism and the experience of European academia for a researcher from Brazil and discuss how a decolonial feminist film curator/programmer can be a gate-opener rather than a gate-keeper.

Abstract: The surge of techniques of virtual reality applied to cinema carried out an actual revolution for the film industry. Indeed, such features applied to the development of several dimensions of the  audiovisual, mainly video games, broadened production, exhibition, and commercial expectations. This phenomenon has not gone unnoticed by film festivals as part of cultural and creative industries. Nonetheless, in Latin America, there are only a few events exclusively devoted to virtual, augmented, 360º, or immersive  reality  applied  to  films. By analyzing the film festivals’ official web pages  retrieved through the FilmFreeWay database, this paper describes some key features of Latin  American film festivals specialized in these areas of visual production. The review shows that such efforts are in their very early stages, in the making, or they have not triggered the interest of the local film industry.

Abstract: This article discusses the contributions of the woman film directors in the context of the Latin-American production. The starting point is based on an inequality position regarding the achievements of men and their preeminence in a sector which belongs to a social frame characterized by a structural machismo. A qualitative methodology is used through the  film  analysis  of  a  sample  composed  by  100  relevant  works  of  the  Latin-American  documentary genre. The films draw a path that begins with the seminal contributions in the New Latin-American Cinema and concludes nowadays. Over the last few years docu-mentary in Lat-in America has been undergoing a consolidation process once that it has reached its maturity in the land-scape of creation, with more possibilities than it has ever had in Film History.fjc201918Fonseca, Journal of Comunication.
